Fridays Are For One Question

This week, I’ve had the privilege of speaking at a Centrifuge camp at Panama City Beach, and my family was able to join me there. It’s been pretty great, but as you’ll see from the picture below, Christian has had just about enough:
See, when you have kids, the vacation isn’t actually much of a rest; you need a vacation from the vacation. Which leads to today’s question:
“What’s the most exhausting vacation you’ve ever taken?”

Great question. Yes, vacations with kids can be exhausting! I’d say the most tiring aspect of any one vacation was when we made the unfortunate decision to take two kids, a pregnant wife, and a disabled mother-in-law on a tour of the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville. Loved Asheville, loved the Biltmore, but nobody told me young kids don’t like spending a day looking at antique rocking chairs. Who knew?

Friday’s are for one question right back at ya. What’s a vacation?

Our youngest was born on December 12. After she and my wife spent two days in the hospital the following week with an infection that turned out to be nothing, we bought a minivan and headed to the mountains of Tennessee to be with my wife’s family. We LOVE hanging with her family, and had been looking forward to the vacation for a long time. So, it was very much to our dismay that vacationing with a 2 week-old and a 23 month-old (who had just been suddenly thrust into life with a sibling) could completely destroy all myths that this particular Christmas vacation was going to be a “good time.”

Well, I got stuck in Cairo, Egypt on the Day of Wrath (the beginning of the Arab Spring)at the “end” of my vacation. It actually ended up being pretty restful (minus the machine guns and riot gear) because due to flight changes I got to stay a bonus day in Johannesburg with some friends.
Might have even figured out my future plans that day…

Oh yeah, but that would definitely NOT have been restful with kiddos.
