Fridays Are For One Question

See if you can tell what these things have in common:

1. College football

2. Chili

3. The end of summer

4. The anticipation of Christmas

5. Some other stuff about the color of leaves

Got it? It’s a list of some of my favorite things about fall. Here, in Middle Tennessee, the weather has changed, and fall has sprung. It’s a great – GREAT – time of the year. So if you’re mourning the summer, the blog is not a friendly place for you today. But if, like me, you have been waiting for fall since approximately June 3, then welcome. And here’s today’s question:

“What’s your favorite part of the fall?”

I love most everything about fall, but I think my very favorite thing is the changing colors of the leaves. And I’ve discovered that they look especially vibrant when viewed through my sunglasses. :-)

    Would we say… rose-colored?

I begin anticipating fall at the end of winter (my 2nd favorite season!). I’d have to say 2 things are my favorite: the colors and the weather (coolness, cloudiness, length of day). Yep…my favorite season!!

It’s not so much what I like about this season, but what I miss about it.

My dad was a trapper, and the cooler weather meant prime furs. It meant that I might get to walk the trapline with him! It meant the quiet jingling of swinging traps and the dark, glassy creek crusted with thin morning ice. It meant stroking the cool, silky brown fur of mink & muskrat. It meant hanging out in the chilly barn, watching Dad stretch pelts, while the woody aroma of burning tobacco swirled from the pipe he held in his teeth. (Thankfully masking the “other” smells!)

Fall meant deer hunting (and still does). The season’s colors were red checked buffalo plaids, blaze orange hats, the black steel of rifle barrels, and a fresh white dusting of snow. It meant a kitchen crowded with chatting women, noisy kids, clanking pots and pans, and patient pies. It meant the men trailing home at dusk, the fresh smell of the woods on their clothes, with either a buck in the truck, or a story of one “you couldn’t get a shot at”. It meant the good dishes and the white tablecloth.

Fall meant a warm house full of family…

I love the cooler weather after our humid Virginia summer. The Shenandoah valley lights up with fall colors, and I get to spend time in the woods hunting.

    Oh and football!
